Method 1 — Use a VPN (fastest, most reliable)
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your traffic and routes it through a server in a location of your choice. Websites see the server's IP, not yours. This is the easiest and most consistent way to change your IP:
- Install a VPN app and sign in.
- Choose a server location (any country you like).
- Connect — your IP changes instantly.
- Reload this page to verify.
A VPN also hides your traffic from your ISP and protects you on public Wi-Fi. For a permanent IP change tied to a specific country, it's the only reliable option.
Method 2 — Use a proxy server
A proxy routes traffic from your browser (or a single app) through a third-party server. Sites see the proxy's IP. Proxies are:
- Faster to set up — no software install, just configure your browser.
- Less secure — most don't encrypt traffic.
- Device-specific — only affects the configured app, not your whole connection.
Good for a quick, low-stakes IP change. Not recommended for sensitive browsing or as a long-term privacy solution.
Method 3 — Use the Tor Browser
Tor routes your traffic through a chain of volunteer-run relays, giving you a new IP at the exit node. It's free and very private, but noticeably slower and some sites actively block Tor exit nodes. Download from torproject.org.
Method 4 — Renew your ISP-assigned IP
Most home internet connections use a dynamic IP that your ISP can change. You can try:
- Unplug your router for several hours or overnight — your ISP may assign a new IP when it reconnects. Not guaranteed.
- Release and renew on Windows: open Command Prompt, run
ipconfig /releasethenipconfig /renew. - Contact your ISP and ask for a new IP — they may do it on request, especially if you have a static IP subscription you want to cancel.
This only changes your public IP, not your private LAN address, and the new IP comes from the same ISP and general location.
How to verify your IP changed
After applying any method, reload the ipchu.com home page. If the IP at the top has changed, it worked. You can also check your detected location and ISP — both should reflect the new IP.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off my router change my IP?
Sometimes. If your ISP uses dynamic IP assignment, leaving your router off long enough may cause it to issue a new address when you reconnect. Many ISPs reassign the same IP, so it's not a reliable method — a VPN works every time.
Can I choose a specific IP address?
Not in general. VPNs let you choose a country or city, but not a specific address. If you need a fixed IP, some VPN providers offer a dedicated IP add-on for an extra fee.
Is changing your IP legal?
Yes, in most countries. Using a VPN or proxy for privacy is legal. A small number of countries restrict VPN use — check your local regulations.
